The School of Applied Language and Intercultural Studies (SALIS)
SALIS is a multilingual and multicultural School. We currently offer French, German, Spanish, Japanese, Chinese, and English for Speakers of Other Languages (ESOL) as full subjects on a number of undergraduate and postgraduate taught programmes. We have a long-running PhD programme, and staff research specialisms in applied linguistics, translation studies, and intercultural studies.
Role Profile
The successful candidate will be able to prepare, deliver and assess a range of core subjects at undergraduate level in a manner consistent with DCU’s high academic standards.
Duties and responsibilities
The duties and responsibilities of the position include, but are not restricted to, the following:
Teaching and Learning
- Deliver undergraduate language modules with a focus on applied language (e.g., language for business), intercultural communication, and digital literacies for language learning and language use.
- Coordinate modules.
- Use a wide range of language teaching and assessment methodologies, which equip students with the skills and attributes needed to be lifelong language learners.
- Prepare teaching and learning materials and activities (campus-based and online) in collaboration with teaching team.
Research and Scholarship
The successful candidate will contribute to the School and Faculty’s research profile by:
- Conducting and publishing high-quality research.
- Contribute to research activities such as conferences and seminars.
- Supervise Undergraduate dissertations.
Service and Contribution to the University and Society
The successful candidate will contribute to the leadership, management, and administration of the School. Typical activities include:
- Engage in outreach activities and liaise with third parties (PPLI, Japanese Embassy…).
- Year abroad coordination (Japan), for outgoing and incoming students.
Qualifications and Experience
Essential
- Applicants for the post must hold a PhD in Japanese Language and/or culture and/or language teaching or a related field.
- They must have native or near-native proficiency in both the target language (Japanese) and English.
Desirable
- Some language teaching experience in facilitating informal learning, as well as expertise in second language development, second language pedagogy, technology-assisted language teaching, would be a strong advantage.
- The successful candidate should be capable of high-quality teaching up to final year undergraduate level. They must be capable of working in a team.
Mandatory Training
The postholder will be required to undertake the following essential compliance training: Orientation, Health & Safety, Data Protection (GDPR) and all Cyber Security Awareness Training. Other training may need to be undertaken when required.
Salary Scale:
Assistant Professor (Lecturer Below Bar) - €46,000 - €62,708
Assistant Professor (Lecturer Above Bar) - €60,847 - €97,512
Appointment will be commensurate with qualifications and experience and in line with current Government pay policy.

Pilot Remote Working Policy
DCU is currently operating a pilot remote working policy for staff which consists of 1 day a week and 2 days a week for a period of up to 21 weeks per year. Such weeks are determined by the Head of each Unit in conjunction with HR and will take cognisance of the academic calendar, business needs and the service provision of the particular area. The terms of the pilot remote working policy will apply.
