Research Fellow (Post-Doctoral Researcher)
The Purpose of the Role
The Department of Sociology at Trinity College Dublin (TCD) seeks to appoint an outstanding and highly motivated Research Fellow with excellent qualifications on a specific purpose contract. The successful candidate will join a TCD-based research team led by Dr Yekaterina Chzhen and collaborate closely with a University College London based team led by Professor Jennifer Symonds on the “Longitudional Educational Achievements: Reducing iNequalities” (LEARN) project. It is a consortium project coordinated by the University of Helsinki, funded under the HORIZON Research and Innovation Actions. The successful candidate will get to travel internationally to project meetings and will collaborate with other consortium members. The Department of Sociology, under the leadership of Professor Jan Skopek, will provide all logistical, academic and intellectual support by integrating the successful candidate into a dynamic network of academics located within the Department of Sociology.
Context
Sociology is a member of the School of Social Sciences and Philosophy, one of 24 Schools within Trinity College. The Department’s principal research clusters are Employment, education and stratification; Migration, integration and identities; Power, conflict and resistance; Social network analysis and digitalisation. The Department has a great variety of international sociologists with a high profile, becoming increasingly international, and combining the use of advanced quantitative methods applied to real-world data with the use of sophisticated and diverse qualitative methodologies. Our research links to several College priority research themes: International Integration centered within Trinity Research in the Social Sciences (TRISS), Identities in Transformation within the Trinity Long Room Hub (TLRH) and Inclusive Society. The department has a long-standing collaboration with one of Ireland’s premier research institutes, the Economic and Social Research Institute (ESRI). Members of the Department have successfully obtained NORFACE, Irish Research Council, European Reseach Council, Horizon 2020 and Horizon Europe funding.
The Department has an active postgraduate programme. It is home to an MSc in Comparative Social Change, delivered jointly with University College Dublin, as well as an MPhil in Race, Ethnicity, Conflict. It has a structured PhD programme combining advanced methodological training with transferrable skills workshops. There are over 20 PhD students and our doctoral graduates have positions in academic institutions, non-governmental organisations and the private sector.

Excellent academic record and have completed a Ph.D. (essential) in, but not limited to:

Knowledge & Experience
Research
• An excellent academic trajectory and methodological training in social science research. (essential)
• Exceptional skills in quantitative survey data analysis using software such as Stata. (essential)
• Experience of analysing data from birth cohort studies. (desirable)
• Experience in conducting systematic literature reviews. (desirable)
• Knowledge of theories and policies relevant to educational inequalities in high-income countries. (desirable)
